Hi and welcome back to The Big Marketing Bite! This week we will look at all things social media and why its so important to help you market your business.
So first of all lets look at the most commonly used social media platforms. For marketing, we can use Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, Pintrest and more. Business accounts are also available which offer that bit more, e.g in terms of analytics etc.
I'm going to try to make this post visual for you, with pictures and links to social media videos and posts. You will soon see how these really are great channels for promoting your food business. You will also note that a lot of the posts have a humorous element which makes things extra fun for the audience. It also increases the likelyhood that the post will go viral and get maximum reach!
**Check out the screenshots below and play the videos to see what I mean!#TheComedyEdit 😂
TikTok #FoodComedy
TikTok is a fantastic platform (How can one billion users be wrong?). It has a particularly large following among generation Z and millennials. The platform is made up of short video clips of all different types. These are easily created and edited by the user. Videos include the 'Likes, Comments and Share' functionality we are familiar with on other platforms. With the huge popularity of the platform, good content has the potential to achieve a great reach. Click the TikTok videos below from Supermacs and Heinz to see more.

Instagram #FoodComedy
Instagram is a great platform for food because, again, its so visual in nature. If you upgrade to Instagram For Business you get access to analytics features (Instagram Insights), advertising options, scheduling , an Instagram shop and more. Again, good content creation can help achieve maximum engagement. I'm loving this Instagram post from Wheetabix, which went viral 😂

Influencer led marketing is another well used strategy used across social media platforms for example the below shows singer and actress Selena Gomez advertising Coca-Cola on Instagram (check out the number of likes and comments). Selena Gomez currently has 296,000,000 followers on instagram, so... yeah... thats a lot of people who will be seeing the advertised product!

Twitter #FoodComedy
Another great platform, Twitter can be used to keep your audience updated on everything new thats happening with your business and also, to provide customer service. Users can interact through the use of the 'Like, Comment and Retweet' buttons.
A good example of the use of Twitter for marketing is shown below, from Aldi. In 2021, Marks and Spencer launched legal action against Aldi over their caterpillar cake being too similar to the M&S premium offering. In a real 'making lemonade out of lemons' effort, Aldi hit back, with a #FreeCuthbert campaign which quickly went viral. (Try googling this to see the number of different accounts that used the #FreeCuthbert and the amount of media coverage it got!)

Facebook #FoodComedy
When it comes to business, I'm a big Facebook fan! They say that facebook use is heavily weighted towards Gen X and older - and that most of these dont bother with the likes of TikTok. As always, your target market demographic will influence the platforms you will choose, but, according to Hootsuite facebook has 1.82 million daily users so it gets serious consideration when deciding on which platform to use. Businesses can set up a regular account or a Facebook business account. See the following video to find out more:

Keeping with the humor edit theme, heres my last few offerings to make you smile!
Anyway, I hope this has given you "food for thought" as to the benifits of using social media marketing for your food business. Its all about creating great content to achive maximum reach and subsequent conversions.
In the spirit of the #ComedyEdit I'm going to leave you with the following video 😂😂😂

Suzanne, this is a virtual sensory overload! Well done! A demonstration of how video use can bring fun and comedic value to a brand. I love The Internship, so funny - that definitely brought a smile to my face... its all about being "on the line" ;-) You have shown Food and Social media synergistically aligned in different formats and on a plethora of platforms from Twitter to instagram. It is amazing the difference a celebrity endorsement makes! Wow! The many millions (296m) of followers Selena Gomez has converted to almost 8m 'likes' on her Coca-Cola Instagram post, a small % but in the grand scheme, phenomenally huge exposure - really impressive and a very clever use of a digital marketing concept! Suzanne, this is a great piece and such a diverse insight. Colette Breen-O'Boyle 10582504
Hi Suzanne, what a great take on this post - #TheComedyEdit... I'm sure it will be trending in no time. Simple examples and easy to digest links in your post make it easy to see why each individual platform brings something extra to the food industry. You should definitely take on this type of angle/approach in some of your future posts, as this has to have been on of my favorite so far. The best was the Aldi/M&S cake dispute - I remember that went viral and was such a clever use of social media marketing. Suzanne Earley
Suzanne! You've really caught my eye with some clever social media visuals Well done on another very cool blog post! Wow there really is so many social media platforms out there available to users. As you say comedy can really grab attention so well done some of these posts are certainly very catchy and could provide a lot of inspiration to small food businesses. I like how you have broken down each platform into a section and give a brief description which could be very useful to new food businesses starting off. I really like the detail you have shown around the caterpillar cake and how businesses can take a negative and turn it into a positive. Thanks again for a wonderful post! Can't wait to read next weeks one
thanks Suzanne for the great post on Social media marketing for the food indudtry and in particular i loved the humour angle, it’s really innovative and enlightening. Advertising spend can feel so daunting to a small business like ours so it’s great to get some new ideas and angles. Such as the use of humour and how to engage on tik tok and the benefits it offers in terms of getting people to your website. I will certainly now have to give tik tok some more thought and attention. Thanks Caitriona
